Mundus Hodiernus -latinan alkeiskirja

Postiluukustani putosi tänään (8.2.2016) pitkään odottamani Mundus Hodiernus –latinan kielen alkeiskirja. Tilasin kirjan suomalainen.comin kautta ja siellä tämä englanninkielinen kirja, jonka Brian Smith on toimittanut, maksoi 8,95 euroa. Kanta-asiakkaille postitus ei maksa. Kirja on kustantajan esittelyn mukaisesti alkeiskirja. Se ei verbitaivutuksissa mene preesensiä pitemmälle. Substantiivien taivutustaulukoita ei kirjasta löydy. Kirjassa esiteltyjä tämän päivän sanoja kerrataan kiitettävästi monella eri tavalla kuvien, suoran tekstin ja harjoituksien avulla. Brian Smith itse sanoo kirjastaan seuraavaa:

About this book

The object of this book is to help you develop a natural ‘feel’ for Latin as a language. Verbs in the present indicative are practiced and rehearsed extensively. Internalizing these forms until they become like a second mother tongue for you will make it much easier to understand Latin naturally, without having to translate Word for Word. You will then be able to move on to more demanding aspects of the language with confidence.
At the same time this book introduces a modem Latin vocabulary that can be found in a variety of sources such as Latin discussion groups, Latin news outlets and modem Latin literature.
Once you have understood the text you should read and re-read it again many times. There is no need to spend a long time on this, a few minutes a day are all it takes. ..
Brian Smith, s. 3

Sanotun lisäksi kirja kertoo, mitä sanoja latinan kielestä englantiin on tullut aina omalla sivullaan, mikä antaa lisäpontta opiskelulle. Useinhan latinasta sanotaan, että se on kuollut kieli, joten sellaisen opiskeleminen on turhaa. Englannin kielen sanoista on yli 50 prosenttia johdettu latinasta ja luku on romaanisten kielten kohdalla vieläkin isompi. Näin Smith kertoo latinan kielen ja englannin kielen symbioosista:

V . Did you know ...?

Did you know that many Words in English come from Latin? In fact over 50% of the words found in the English language derive from Latin. Many were borrowed directly from Latin for example by churchmen, who had Latin as the only official language in the church, but most took an indirect route via French. When the Normans conquered England in 1066 they brought with them the French language. For about 300 years after that French was the official language in England with Latin being used for formal documents. Over time the French overlords began to use more and more English as they dealt with the native English population. During this period countless French and Latin terms entered English that were necessary to describe official matters that were never conducted in English, s. 18.

Yhteenveto
